3D Morality Map

Well this is it, the 3D morality map! The theory all the cool kids are talking about.

So, the 3D morality map states that self-interest, sadism, and true-care are 3 separate axis. In case you don't know what "separate axis" means, it means they can be combined in any way.

So you could have true-care but no sadism, or sadism but no true-care. Or both. Or neither.

Minus sadism is natural-respect. NOT true-care. It means that the opposite of wanting to hurt innocent others, is wanting to NOT hurt them. But not wanting to hurt someone is not the same as wanting to help them.

Minus true-care is coldness. It means the opposite of wanting to help innocent others, is not wanting to help them. Not wanting to help someone is not the same as wanting to hurt them.

One common mistake people make in trying to understand this 3D morality map, is that morality IS NOT about your actions. It is about your desires. It is about your soul, it is about who you are, what makes you, "you".

If I only had the desire to eat some ice-cream, and I am given a choice "help this guy and you get to eat some ice-cream, or don't help and get none", and I help the guy and get some ice-cream... well that's an action. But WHY I made that action is another question.

In this case I already stated I only had the desire to eat ice-cream, so while I did a good action, that action WAS NOT TRUE-CARE. It was self-interest.

Unentangling actions from morality takes a lot of examples and stories. Maybe I'll do those later.

Anyhow, because morality is 3D, this leads to 12 classes of being. It took me a long time to arrive at the number 12. The way to reach this number takes a few steps:

  1. Let's start with 3x3x3, for all combinations of neutral positive and negative, in a 3D space. (Remember that positive does not mean good. It just means it has that aspect in question, and that aspect may be self-interest, sadism or true-care). That equals 27.
  2. Next you need to realise that no being can have "minus self-interest". So that becomes 3x3x2 (18).
  3. Then you need to realise that if you don't want anything, you don't exist. So that means you need to have at least one "positive value" to exist. So that rules out 4 beings that have only neutral or negative values. So now we have 14.
  4. The final step is realising that natural-respect or coldness makes no sense unless you have self-interest. An angel with natural-respect is the same thing as angel without natural-respect. So now we have 12. And that's the final answer.

Here's an alternate form of the morality map diagram. This means exactly the same thing as the above diagram!!

It's like 1.5 is the same thing as 3/2, just expressed in a different way.

In this diagram, we only care about the ratio between the axis, so we kind of compress it into 2D. The ratio is really the most important thing anyhow.

Also, the fact that the classes are drawn with cool meaningful symbols is nice. This makes it more aesthetically pleasing.

Morality can't be changed. You are who you are. Your morality doesn't change. Your actions can change... Your choices may change. But your morality remains the same.

Well, actually people can change their morality, but it doesn't "just happen" like that. It can only change for the better. And only changes for someone when they complete the 3rd level of evolution. Humanity have not completed this level, they aren't even half way, so it hasn't happened yet. Completing the 3rd level pretty much means cleansing your soul of any sadism (if any existed) and removing any selfishness that existed.

After the Universe is cleansed of sadism, and the selfish people have learnt what is wrong with their souls, there will only be 5 "ways of being", not even 12 anymore. But that's fine, as the other 7 kind of sucked. One was even pure evil >:(
