The "guy pays for it" rule is retarded.

I understand making it simple and... social is a nice thing. But it's not fair.

It should come down to these rules:

1) If one person is clearly richer, he/she pays for the meal.

2) If both need to stretch their money, they should pay their own meal, or in fact collaborate on a plan to get the most food for the least money. In effect, helping each other save money. (Should be quite common for young students). Marriage is all about team work and making the most of money, so if a guy and a girl can't collaborate to save each other money, they aren't gonna stick together long term anyhow.

2) If both people are well off, they can figure it out between them who pays. They are probably both used to making business deals anyhow so it should come natural to them. "I'll pay, if you promise to give me a few pointers in your field of expertise".
